The Era of Marginal Gains
Since Team Sky introduced the concept of *Marginal Gains*, the cycling industry started selling very expensive upgrades to save fractions of a Watt. One of the most popular (and flashy) is the OSPW (Oversized Pulley Wheel System) with ceramic bearings.
The Physics Behind Giant Pulleys
The theoretical idea is solid: a larger pulley forces the chain to bend less. Less bending = less friction between links = Watts saved. Furthermore, spherical ceramic bearings rotate with less resistance than steel ones.
But how many Watts are we saving?

Ceramic bearings require *much* more maintenance than steel ones. If they get dirty and are not cleaned/greased frequently, the friction quickly exceeds that of standard components.
