The Command Center
Replacing the old magnet odometer with a modern GPS is the first step to taking cycling seriously. Garmin (Edge series) and Wahoo (ELEMNT series) dominate the market, but have two diametrically opposed philosophies.
Approaches Compared
| Feature | Garmin (e.g., Edge 540/840) | Wahoo (e.g., ELEMNT Bolt v2) |
|---|---|---|
| Configuration | Device-centric (do everything from the screen) | App-centric (set everything from smartphone) |
| Maps and Navigation | Very detailed, superb recalculation | Minimalist, high contrast, perfect for following the track |
| Data Ecosystem | Garmin Connect (a universe of data and metrics) | Very lean, oriented to direct sync with Strava/TrainingPeaks |
| Buttons vs Touch | Excellent touchscreen on higher models | Physical buttons only (foolproof with winter gloves) |
[ TIP ]
If you are a data nerd who loves getting lost in Firstbeat charts (VO2Max, Recovery Time, etc.), Garmin is the mandatory choice.
The Verdict
Choose Wahoo if you want a "set-and-forget" device: you turn it on, load the route, pedal, it never crashes, and the screen is readable in glaring sun without distractions. Choose Garmin if you like exploring, making route changes on the fly using POI (Points of Interest) on the display, or if you already have a Garmin smartwatch to sync your entire training load (Body Battery).
